CRYPTOCURRENCY / VIRTUAL DIGITAL ASSET FRAUD INVESTIGATION CHECKLIST

Entity / individual: ___ · Period: ___

This checklist covers the accounting/forensic-review procedures a CA can reasonably perform in a suspected virtual digital asset (VDA) fraud or misappropriation matter. On-chain wallet forensics beyond basic public-ledger tracing, and any recovery action, are specialist and legal functions respectively — this checklist identifies where those handoffs occur rather than covering them.

Common questions

FAQs.

Can a CA perform full blockchain forensics without a specialist tool?
Basic tracing on a transparent public ledger (following a small number of hops from a known wallet) is feasible manually via a block explorer. Anything involving mixing services, privacy coins, cross-chain bridges, or a large number of hops needs specialist blockchain-analytics tooling and expertise — this checklist is built to flag that handoff point clearly rather than pretend a CA can substitute for that specialist work.
Why value the loss at the transaction date rather than today's price?
Valuing at the date of the transaction reflects the actual value misappropriated at the time it happened, consistent with how VDA transfers are valued for Sec 115BBH tax purposes — using today's price would either overstate or understate the loss depending on the asset's price movement since, and wouldn't reflect what was actually taken.
Can exchanges be compelled to hand over KYC records directly to the CA?
Generally no — exchanges typically require a formal legal process (a law-enforcement request, a court order, or their own compliance escalation route) rather than releasing customer KYC/transaction data to a private party's request alone. Document the specific route used for each request in Section C rather than assuming informal requests will succeed.
