Common questions

FAQs.

What is a Lending Service Provider (LSP) and how does it differ from co-lending?
An LSP is a fintech engaged by a bank or NBFC to source borrowers, provide credit-scoring inputs, or service loans on the regulated entity's behalf — the RE remains the sole lender of record and the LSP does not fund any part of the loan itself. Co-lending, by contrast, involves two regulated entities each funding a share of the same loan. An LSP arrangement is tested against the RBI Digital Lending Guidelines; a co-lending arrangement is tested against the separate Co-Lending Model framework.
Why must loan disbursement and collection avoid the LSP's own pooling account?
The RBI Digital Lending Guidelines require disbursement and repayment to flow directly between the regulated entity and the borrower specifically to prevent co-mingling of the RE's loan funds with the LSP's own money — a first-generation digital-lending problem where borrower repayments sat in an LSP-controlled account before being remitted to the lender, creating fund-diversion and reconciliation risk.
What is FLDG and why is it capped?
A First Loss Default Guarantee is a credit-risk-sharing arrangement where the LSP (or another third party) absorbs a portion of default losses on the RE's loan book, up to an agreed limit. RBI caps FLDG as a percentage of the outstanding portfolio it covers to prevent it being used to structure what is effectively unauthorised balance-sheet lending by the LSP — verify the exact current cap against RBI's latest circular, since this has been introduced and refined progressively.
