Common questions

FAQs.

Who needs to file Form 29B?
Every company whose income-tax payable on total income computed under normal provisions is less than the Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) payable on book profit computed under Section 115JB must obtain and file Form 29B, certified by a Chartered Accountant, along with the return of income.
Does Form 29B compute the MAT tax liability itself?
This template computes the book profit — the base figure — using the standard Explanation 1 additions and deductions. It deliberately leaves the tax-rate application blank rather than hardcoding a MAT rate, since the rate, surcharge slabs, and cess are set by the Finance Act each year and can change; apply the rate in force for the relevant assessment year before finalising the certificate.
Is MAT credit available if MAT is paid?
Yes — tax paid under Section 115JB in excess of the normal tax liability is available as MAT credit under Section 115JAA, carried forward and set off against normal tax liability in future years (subject to the applicable carry-forward period), to the extent normal tax exceeds MAT in that future year.
