GST LATE FEE & INTEREST WORKING PAPER

Entity: ___ · GSTIN: ___ · Financial year ended: ___

Tax period: ___ · Days delayed: ___

This working paper records the CONCLUSION of a late-fee/interest computation performed separately — use the GST Late Fee & Interest Calculator (coraa.ai/university/gst-late-fee-calculator) to work out the figures below, since the exact formula depends on turnover (nil vs non-nil return), the applicable daily rate cap, and whether interest applies to the gross liability or only the cash-ledger portion of tax paid.

Common questions

FAQs.

Does GST interest under Section 50 apply to the full tax liability or just the shortfall?
Following the amendment restricting Section 50 interest to the net cash-tax liability, interest generally applies only to the portion of tax paid by debit to the electronic cash ledger — not to the portion that was already covered by available input tax credit, even though the return itself was filed late. This is a materially smaller interest base than a gross-liability calculation would produce.
Is late fee charged separately for CGST and SGST?
Yes — the commonly quoted "₹50/day" or "₹20/day" figures are actually the combined CGST + SGST late fee (₹25+₹25 or ₹10+₹10 respectively); there is no separate IGST late fee since IGST returns are not filed independently of CGST/SGST in the standard GSTR-3B/GSTR-1 filing structure.
Why use a separate calculator instead of computing the figures directly in this template?
The exact late-fee cap and interest computation depend on several date-and-rate variables (exact number of days delayed, whether the return is nil or non-nil, the turnover-tier cap applicable, and the cash-vs-ITC split of the liability) that change the calculation in ways better suited to an interactive calculator than a static document — this working paper is the audit record of that calculator's conclusion, not a recomputation of it.
