IMPAIRMENT OF ASSETS — AUDIT WORKING PAPER (IND AS 36)

Entity: ___ · Period ended: ___

A. Impairment Indicator Screening (Ind AS 36 para 12)

  • External indicators: significant decline in market value beyond normal use, adverse changes in the technological/market/economic/legal environment, increase in market interest rates affecting the discount rate, entity's market capitalisation below net asset carrying value.
  • Internal indicators: evidence of obsolescence or physical damage, significant adverse changes in the asset's use (idle, discontinuation plans, restructuring), evidence from internal reporting that economic performance is worse than expected.
  • Note: goodwill and indefinite-life intangibles require an ANNUAL impairment test regardless of whether an indicator exists.

Common questions

FAQs.

Which assets must be tested for impairment every year regardless of indicators?
Goodwill and intangible assets with an indefinite useful life (or not yet available for use) require an annual impairment test irrespective of whether an impairment indicator exists — every other asset is only tested when an indicator is identified.
What is Value in Use and why is it often the more contentious figure?
It's the present value of future cash flows expected from the asset or CGU, discounted at a pre-tax rate reflecting current market risk assessments. It's contentious because it depends on management's cash flow projections and the discount rate chosen — both need independent auditor scrutiny for reasonableness, unlike FVLCD which can sometimes be evidenced by an external quote or comparable transaction.
Can a goodwill impairment ever be reversed?
No — Ind AS 36 explicitly prohibits reversing an impairment loss recognised for goodwill in a subsequent period, even if the circumstances that caused it improve. Reversals are only permitted for other assets, subject to a cap at what the carrying amount would have been without the original impairment.
