Common questions

FAQs.

What's the core procedure for auditing cash and bank balances?
Direct bank confirmation letters (SA 505 external confirmation), review of bank reconciliation statements for old or unusual reconciling items, and physical cash verification — often a surprise count — for material cash-in-hand balances.
What should raise concern in a bank reconciliation?
Long-outstanding cheques or deposits, especially ones reversing shortly after year-end, unexplained reconciling items, or reconciliations that consistently aren't performed on time — all can indicate error or manipulation.
Does CARO 2020 require anything specific here?
Not a dedicated clause on cash and bank itself, but working-capital limits sanctioned against current-asset security above ₹5 crore (clause (ii)(b)) require reconciling quarterly returns filed with the bank against the books, which draws directly on this working paper.
