There is no single best accounting package for Indian businesses. Choose on what your business and your auditor need: GST and e-invoicing support, an audit trail that cannot be switched off, bank feeds, multiple users, and clean data export. We do not quote prices here; check current pricing on each vendor's site.
Facts checked: 9 October 2026. Audit-trail details for TallyPrime and Busy were read on the vendors' own pages. The rule itself was read in secondary commentary; the MCA site could not be opened by our tool. For Zoho Books and Marg we found only partner and listing sites, and for QuickBooks nothing usable, so we make no product claim for them beyond the checklist. Verify features on the official pages.
The legal feature that now decides the choice
Under the proviso to Rule 3(1) of the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014, a company that keeps books in accounting software must use software with an audit trail of every transaction, an edit log of each change with its date, and a trail that cannot be disabled. It applies to financial years starting on or after 1 April 2023. The statutory auditor reports on it under Rule 11(g) of the Companies (Audit and Auditors) Rules, 2014. Our explainer on the audit trail rule 11(g) covers the reporting. Note the two rules sit in different sets of Rules.
Reported practice differs on whether the preservation limb was reportable for FY 2023-24, so follow current ICAI guidance for the year you audit.
What to compare
| Need | What to check |
|---|---|
| GST | GSTR-1 and 3B data preparation, HSN/SAC, reverse charge, reconciliation with GSTR-2B |
| E-invoicing and e-way bill | Direct generation from a voucher, IRN and QR on the print, cancellation |
| Audit trail (Rule 3(1)) | Always on, cannot be disabled, logs edits and deletions with user and time |
| Bank feeds | Whether your own bank is supported and statements reconcile |
| Multi-user | Role-based access, approval flow, separate user logins |
| Auditor access | Read-only access or complete export without vendor help |
| Data location | Where data is stored and how backups run, as reported under the Rules |
What the vendors say on their own pages
- TallyPrime: its page says the edit log records changes with date and time, the user who made the change, and tracks deleted transactions, across vouchers and masters such as ledgers, groups and stock items.
- Busy: its pages say the audit trail is switched on from settings, can be on by default where GSTIN or CIN is entered, cannot be disabled once on, and has an Audit Trail Report that filters by user, entry type and date. They list e-way bill and e-invoice support in the Standard edition.
- Zoho Books, Marg, QuickBooks: read the vendor's documentation for each row in the table above. Do not rely on a reseller's summary for audit-trail compliance.
An auditor's checklist for pulling data
For any system:
- Ask the client for the Rule 3(1) audit-trail evidence and the user list.
- Export the trial balance, ledger, and day book for the full year, with voucher numbers and dates.
- Reconcile the trial balance to the signed financial statements.
- Obtain the edit and deletion log, and test it for entries after year end.
By system type:
| Type | Typical extraction route | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop (Tally, Busy) | Export from reports to Excel or XML, and the audit-trail or edit-log report | Backup restored on a different machine, edits after audit date |
| Cloud (browser based) | Report downloads, vendor export, or read-only login | Export limits, deleted records missing from reports |
| ERP | Table extract or system report agreed with IT | Report logic that hides reversed entries |
| Billing or retail software | Sales register plus GST return data | Bills without a ledger posting |

Illustrative scenario
A trader with ₹12 crore turnover moves from a desktop package to a cloud package on 1 October. The auditor asks for the audit trail for the full year and finds the old package's edit log was not exported before the switch. The trader must now keep a backup of the old data and show it to the auditor, otherwise the auditor has no trail for April to September. The figures are invented.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tally or Zoho better for a small business?
Neither wins on its own. Match the features above to your volume, users and your auditor's needs.
Does every business need an audit trail?
The Rule 3(1) proviso applies to companies. Others may still want it for control; ask your CA.
Can a CA firm audit directly from the software?
Only if access is read-only and logged. Otherwise take an export and keep the extraction record.
Should I check pricing before choosing?
Yes. Prices and plans change, so check current pricing on the vendor's site.
