Internal audit is the work of checking, for a company's management and board, whether its controls and processes are working, and reporting what is not. You can reach it through a commerce or CA background, through the ICAI internal audit course if you are a member, or through the global CIA credential, and the first year is mostly testing controls and writing up what you find. This guide gives no salary figures because we could not verify any.
Last reviewed: 17 October 2026. Facts checked. We opened the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) CIA page and the ICAI Internal Audit Standards Board pages for the Certificate Course on Internal Audit (CCIA). We searched for career guidance, but the results were commercial career sites with figures we could not confirm, so we did not use them. We did not verify how many internal auditors in India hold each qualification, or hiring trends. The description of day-to-day work is our own practical summary, not a sourced statistic.
What internal auditors actually do
Internal auditors work for the organisation, either in-house or through a firm that has been appointed as internal auditor. Their job differs from statutory audit, which gives an opinion on the financial statements. Internal audit looks at how the business runs: purchases, sales, payroll, inventory, treasury, IT access, compliance. See internal audit vs external and statutory audit and what internal audit is and who needs it for the full contrast.
A typical engagement runs through planning, walkthroughs, testing, drafting findings, agreeing actions with management and following up. The result goes to management and, in many companies, to the audit committee.
Routes in
Chartered Accountancy
The CA qualification covers audit and accounting broadly, and some CAs build an internal audit career after qualifying. We did not verify how common this route is or any hiring preference, so treat it as one option, not the only one.
ICAI Certificate Course on Internal Audit
The ICAI offers a Certificate Course on Internal Audit (CCIA), run by its Internal Audit Standards Board. Its page states that members of ICAI are eligible, that the duration is spread over ten days, and that the course was revamped with a heavy dose of information technology. We did not open the full course structure or fee details, so check the ICAI site for the current batch.
Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
The CIA is the IIA's global internal audit credential, available since 1974. The IIA's page lists three exam parts: Part 1 with 125 questions in 150 minutes, and Parts 2 and 3 with 100 questions in 120 minutes each. It sets education and experience conditions: for example, a bachelor's degree needs proof of two years of internal audit experience, and a master's degree needs one. You have three years from acceptance to meet the requirements. Check the IIA page for current rules and fees.
Other starting points
People also come from commerce degrees, cost and management accounting, IT and information systems backgrounds, or from industry roles in finance, operations or compliance.
Skills to build
| Skill | Why it matters | How to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Understanding processes | You cannot test a control you cannot explain | Draw the purchase-to-pay and order-to-cash flow from memory |
| Reading financial records | Most tests start from ledgers and reports | Trace a few entries from invoice to ledger to bank |
| Excel and data analysis | Testing whole populations beats picking samples | Practise filters, pivots, lookups and duplicate checks |
| Writing | Findings are only useful if clear | Write each finding as condition, criteria, cause, effect, action |
| Interviewing | Process owners tell you how work really happens | Ask open questions and listen to the steps |
| Professional scepticism | Do not accept what you are told without evidence | Ask "how do you know?" |
| Basic IT controls | Many controls now live in systems | Learn access, change and backup controls |
| Tact | You report to people who must then fix the issue | Present facts, not blame |
What the first year usually looks like
This is our practical summary of common tasks, and it will vary by employer.
Months 1 to 3. You learn the client or company, read prior reports, and shadow walkthroughs. You are given simple tests: check approvals on a sample of purchase orders, confirm invoices match receipts, recompute a payroll sample.
Months 4 to 8. You own a section of an audit. You prepare working papers, run data tests in Excel, raise queries with process owners and draft findings. You start to see which findings matter and which are noise.
Months 9 to 12. You take part in a whole engagement from planning to reporting. You present findings to the process owner, track management's action plan and learn how to rate findings. You may help prepare a risk register or control matrix.
How to stand out early
- Keep working papers clear enough that another person can follow them without asking you.
- Write the first draft of a finding yourself, then compare with the senior's edit.
- Learn one process deeply, such as payroll or inventory. Our payroll and purchase-to-pay checklists are a start.
- Learn the tools your team uses and how AI can speed up routine work. See how AI is changing junior CA roles.
Where the career can go
Typical steps are staff to senior, then manager, then head of internal audit or chief audit executive in a company, or partner in a firm. Some move into risk, compliance, IT audit, forensic or finance roles. We have not verified timelines, so do not rely on any fixed number of years.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become an internal auditor in India?
You can start with a commerce or accounting background, a CA qualification or an IT background, and join a company internal audit team or a firm. Credentials such as the CIA or the ICAI internal audit course can add to your profile.
Do I need a CA to work in internal audit?
We found no source saying it is compulsory for all roles. Requirements depend on the employer and the assignment. Check the terms of each role or engagement.
Is the CIA worth it?
It is the IIA's global internal audit credential, and the IIA lists three exam parts and experience conditions. Whether it fits your path depends on where you want to work. Read the IIA requirements before deciding.
Who can take the ICAI internal audit course?
According to the CCIA page we opened, members of ICAI are eligible. Check the ICAI site for the current batch and conditions.
What is the difference between internal and statutory audit careers?
Statutory audit gives an opinion on the financial statements each year. Internal audit looks at processes and controls through the year and reports to management. The skills overlap, but internal audit has more focus on operations and risk.
