How it works

Retail internal audit is strongest when central data testing and branch visit evidence are held in the same workbook. POS, cash, card, UPI, stock, refund and discount data can be tested centrally; selected exceptions should then be verified at the store.

The Excel export gives auditors separate sheets for engagement scope, branch visits, RCM rows, POS/cash reconciliation, stock counts, refund/discount testing and monitoring exceptions. It is a working-paper starting point, not a substitute for sample design or professional judgement.

Worked example

A CA firm is reviewing 25 retail branches with company-owned stores, franchise stores and marketplace sales.

Common mistakes

Testing only the branch visit file
Retail leakage often appears in POS, payment gateway and stock data before it is visible at the branch visit.
No settlement ageing
Card, UPI, wallet, marketplace and COD receipts need ageing, not only total matching.
Weak refund evidence
Refund testing should match original invoice, customer acknowledgement, payment reversal and returned-stock movement.

Frequently asked questions

What is a retail branch audit workbook?+
It is a multi-sheet working paper used to plan and document store-level internal audit: branch visits, POS/cash reconciliation, stock count, refund testing, RCM rows and monitoring exceptions.
Does the workbook replace a branch visit?+
No. It helps structure central analytics and fieldwork evidence. Cash counts, stock checks, manager explanations and physical controls still need branch-level review.
Which retail audit data should be requested first?+
Request POS day reports, invoice sequences, void/refund logs, payment gateway settlements, bank statements, stock ledgers, transfer registers, price masters, discount dumps and POS user lists.
