Common questions

FAQs.

What is an affidavit?
An affidavit is a written statement of facts made on oath or affirmation by the person making it, the deponent, and sworn before a notary public, an oath commissioner or another authorised person. It is used as evidence or as a declaration to an authority.
Does an affidavit have to be on stamp paper?
It depends on the State and on the purpose. Many affidavits are printed on non-judicial stamp paper of a prescribed value, and some authorities accept plain paper. Confirm the requirement with the authority that asked for the affidavit.
What is the verification clause?
It is the closing statement in which the deponent confirms that the contents are true and correct to the best of their knowledge and belief and that nothing material is concealed. It is signed together with the affidavit.
Can I use this format for every purpose?
It is a general format. A court affidavit, a name-change affidavit or an affidavit for a government office may need specific wording, so check what the requesting authority requires.
