Common questions

FAQs.

Why do banks ask for a CA certificate to open a proprietorship's current account?
Since a sole proprietorship has no registration certificate of its own akin to a company's incorporation certificate, banks (per RBI's KYC guidelines) accept a CA certificate — alongside GST registration, Shop & Establishment registration, or similar — as one of the acceptable proofs of existence and business activity before opening a current account in the proprietorship's trade name.
Does this certificate establish the proprietorship as a separate legal entity?
No — and the certificate says so explicitly. A proprietorship is legally indistinguishable from its proprietor; all liabilities of the business are personal liabilities of the individual named. The certificate only confirms that this individual carries on business under the stated trade name, not that a separate legal person exists.
What if the proprietorship isn't GST-registered?
Leave the GSTIN field blank — many small proprietorships fall below the GST registration threshold and this certificate does not require GST registration to be issued. In that case, rely more heavily on the income-tax PAN, books of account, and any trade licence as the underlying evidence for the certificate.
