Common questions

FAQs.

What must a GST tax invoice contain?
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules requires the supplier name, address and GSTIN, a consecutive serial number, the date of issue, the recipient name, address and GSTIN where registered, the HSN code for goods or SAC for services, the description, quantity and unit, the total value and taxable value after discount, the rate and amount of CGST, SGST or IGST and cess, the place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies, whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and the signature of the supplier or authorised representative.
What is the difference between a tax invoice and a bill of supply?
A tax invoice is issued by a registered person making a taxable supply. A bill of supply is issued instead where the supplier is under the composition scheme or the supply is exempt, because no tax is charged. This format is a tax invoice.
How should an invoice number be written?
The number must be consecutive and unique in a financial year, and is limited to sixteen characters using letters, numbers, a hyphen and a slash. Many businesses use a prefix and the year, such as INV/2026-27/001, and keep a separate series for each branch or document type.
Do I need an e-invoice instead?
Taxpayers above the notified aggregate turnover threshold must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal and print the IRN and QR code on the invoice. Check the current threshold on the GST portal. This format can serve as the layout when an e-invoice is required, with the IRN and QR code added.
