NON-CURRENT ASSETS HELD FOR SALE & DISCONTINUED OPERATIONS — AUDIT WORKING PAPER (IND AS 105)

Entity: ___ · Period ended: ___

A. Held-for-Sale Classification Test

  • The asset (or disposal group) is available for immediate sale in its present condition, subject only to terms that are usual and customary.
  • The sale is highly probable — management is committed to a plan to sell, an active programme to locate a buyer has been initiated, the asset is being actively marketed at a reasonable price relative to fair value.
  • The sale is expected to be completed within one year of classification (with limited, specific exceptions where the delay is caused by events/circumstances beyond the entity's control and there is continued commitment to the plan).

Common questions

FAQs.

What makes a sale "highly probable" for held-for-sale classification?
A specific set of criteria, not just management intention: an active programme to locate a buyer, marketing at a price reasonable relative to current fair value, expected completion within a year, and a low probability that the plan will be withdrawn or significantly changed — all need to be evidenced, not just asserted.
Why does discontinued-operations presentation restate the comparative income statement but not the balance sheet?
Ind AS 105 requires the comparative statement of profit and loss to be re-presented as if the operation had been discontinued from the start of the comparative period, so readers can compare continuing-operations performance across years — but the comparative balance sheet is presented as originally reported, since assets/liabilities classification as held-for-sale is a point-in-time test, not something applied retrospectively.
Does classification as held for sale mean the asset stops being depreciated?
Yes — from the date of classification, the asset is no longer depreciated or amortised, since it's no longer being used to generate ongoing operating cash flows; it's carried at the lower of carrying amount and fair value less costs to sell instead.
