ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES — AUDIT WORKING PAPER (SA 520)

Entity: ___ · Period ended: ___

A. Basis of Expectation

Describe the source of the expectation used below — prior-period figures adjusted for known changes, budgeted/forecast amounts, industry or peer benchmarks, or a relationship between financial and non-financial data (e.g. payroll expense vs. headcount). SA 520 requires the expectation to be developed independently and with enough precision to identify a misstatement that, individually or aggregated with others, may cause the financial statements to be materially misstated.

Common questions

FAQs.

Why does the table show "actual as % of expected" instead of a "% variance"?
Both convey the same underlying comparison — this format (e.g. 121% means 21% over expectation) is computed directly from the two entered figures and avoids ambiguity about which base a percentage variance is measured against; treat any figure meaningfully over or under 100% the same way you would a percentage variance for investigation purposes.
What happens if I only fill in 3 of the 6 line-item slots?
The other 3 simply don't appear in the downloaded document — the table only prints rows you've actually entered data for, so a smaller analytical review doesn't leave the certificate looking like an unfinished 6-row template.
Does obtaining a management explanation for a variance satisfy SA 520 on its own?
No — SA 520 specifically requires the explanation to be corroborated with other audit evidence and evaluated for consistency with other information obtained during the audit. An uncorroborated explanation, however plausible, is not sufficient appropriate audit evidence by itself.
