Common questions

FAQs.

What is the difference between adjusting and non-adjusting events?
Adjusting events provide evidence of conditions that existed at the balance-sheet date — a customer’s post-year-end insolvency proving the receivable was already doubtful — and the financial statements are adjusted. Non-adjusting events arise from conditions after the date — a fire in April, a major acquisition — and are disclosed if material, never adjusted.
Up to which date must subsequent events procedures extend?
To the date of the auditor’s report — SA 560 requires procedures covering the entire period from the balance-sheet date to that date. Events between the report date and the date the financial statements are issued create obligations only if they come to the auditor’s attention.
