Big Four Audit Firms in India: Who They Are and How the Network Model Works

Who the Big Four are, which Indian firms audit under each network name, why they are legally separate, and how NFRA and ICAI oversee them. Neutral, no ranking.

The Big Four are Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC. Each is a global network of separately owned member firms, not one company. In India, audits are signed by Indian firms that are members of these networks, and they are regulated by ICAI and, for larger entities, NFRA. This article is a factual guide and does not rank the firms.

Last reviewed: 17 October 2026. Facts checked. We opened Deloitte India's and EY India's own network statements, the Wikipedia article on the Big Four for network structure, and a Taxmann report on NFRA inspection reports of March 2026. We read search summaries of company filings and of the 2018 MCA expert committee, but we did not open the ICAI firm register, the KPMG or PwC India legal pages (one returned an error), or the committee report itself. Firm names and registration numbers change, so confirm them on the register before you cite them.

What "Big Four" means

The term refers to the four largest professional services networks in the world. Wikipedia describes each as a network of member firms that are owned and managed independently and share a name, brand and quality standards. The global coordinating entity does not itself perform external professional services or own the member firms.

Two network statements back this up:

  • Deloitte India's page says Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited and each of its member firms are "legally separate and independent entities".
  • EY's page says "Each member of the EY organization is a separate and distinct legal entity."

This matters in practice. A client signs a contract with a local member firm. The global network is not a party to it.

Indian firms that appear under each network

Company filings and market commentary commonly show the following Indian audit firms in connection with each network. We took these names from search summaries of filings and commentary, not from the ICAI register.

Network Indian audit firm commonly named in filings Note
Deloitte Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP Deloitte India's own page names Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP as a separate Indian firm
EY S.R. Batliboi & Co. LLP, and related Batliboi firms More than one registered firm carries this family name
KPMG B S R & Co. LLP Filings describe it as part of the B S R network
PwC Price Waterhouse Chartered Accountants LLP Older sources use the earlier name Price Waterhouse & Co

Three cautions apply. Network groups often contain several registered firms, one for audit and others for advisory or tax. Names and LLP conversions change. And the table lists examples, not a full list of entities.

Why the network model exists

Reports and the 2018 MCA expert committee describe India as having firms set up by Indian chartered accountants, some of which tie up with international networks. The committee reportedly looked at how these networks are structured and recommended annual transparency reports to NFRA covering the network and payments between the Indian firm and network entities. We read this only in summaries.

In plain terms, an Indian statutory audit must be signed by a chartered accountant firm, so the Indian member firm carries the signature and the regulatory responsibility.

How these firms are overseen

  • ICAI regulates chartered accountants and firms in India.
  • NFRA inspects auditors of larger entities. According to Taxmann, NFRA issued four inspection reports on 16 March 2026 covering leading audit firms, including entities from the Big Four network. The reports looked at firm-level quality controls and engagement work such as revenue recognition and loans and advances. The page did not say which firms were covered, and we do not either.
  • The Companies Act sets rotation, independence and disqualification rules. See our auditor rotation tracker and disqualification checker for the mechanics.

What this means for a mid-tier or smaller firm

The Big Four brand is an advantage in some pitches and not in others. Many companies and promoters prefer a smaller partner-led team. We cover the competitive picture in Mid-Tier vs Big Four: India and the Agentic AI Race and the technology angle in what Big Four AI means for mid-tier Indian firms. We do not claim here that any group is better or worse. Our guide on audit types shows what the work itself involves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which firms are the Big Four?

Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC. Wikipedia describes them as the four largest professional services networks in the world.

Is Deloitte Haskins & Sells the same as Deloitte?

It is the Indian firm widely associated with the Deloitte network. Deloitte India's own page shows another firm, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP. Network firms are legally separate, so each entity has its own role.

Do the Big Four audit in India directly?

The signing firm is an Indian member firm. The global network does not audit and does not own member firms, per the network statements we opened.

Who regulates Big Four audits in India?

ICAI regulates the profession. NFRA inspects auditors of larger entities and published four inspection reports on 16 March 2026.

Are the Big Four better than other firms?

We do not rank them. Audit quality depends on the engagement team, the client and the firm's quality system, not only the brand.
