Internal Audit Courses in India: Which One Fits Which Role

Internal audit courses and classes in India: ICAI concurrent audit certificate course, CIA, ISO lead auditor and on-the-job routes.

No single course makes someone an internal auditor in India. The useful question is which role you want: bank concurrent audit, corporate internal audit, ISO management-system audit or a risk and governance role. Each has a course that fits it, and most people add one course to a base of accounting skills and real work.

Last reviewed: 17 October 2026. Facts checked. We ran a web search on ICAI's internal audit courses and opened the search summaries of the ICAI Internal Audit Standards Board pages for the Certificate Course on Concurrent Audit of Banks (eligibility, 80% attendance, a six-month wait between test attempts, 6 days and 24 sessions, 30 CPE hours, and the statement that a certificate course is not a qualification). The fee and schedule details came from an older listing. The search returned nothing on DISA or CIA eligibility, so for those we refer to our own existing posts and tell you to check the issuing body. Course content, fees and dates change often, so confirm each one directly before you pay. We have no connection with any course provider.

Start with the role

ICAI Certificate Course on Concurrent Audit of Banks

This is the one course in this list that we could verify from ICAI's own pages in the search results. From the summaries:

  • Who: members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
  • Format: about 6 days, split into 24 technical sessions. A virtual version also exists.
  • Attendance: at least 80% of classes to sit the evaluation test.
  • Test: unlimited attempts, with a gap of six months before a re-attempt.
  • CPE: 30 hours credit.
  • Status: ICAI states that a certificate course does not grant a qualification and should not be mentioned along with the member's name as one.

That last point is easy to miss. The course is useful for skills and empanelment readiness, but it is not a post-nominal. Fees and schedules in the listings we read may be out of date.

CIA and other global certifications

The Certified Internal Auditor credential is issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors. We could not verify current eligibility or exam structure from the sources we opened, so check the IIA site. For the comparison with CISA and the CA qualification, read CIA vs CISA vs CA: which certification for internal audit.

ISO lead auditor courses

If the work is auditing quality, environment, information security or similar management systems, a lead auditor course for that standard is the usual entry. See ISO lead auditor course: what it covers and how to choose. For the day-to-day method, how to run an ISO internal audit is a useful companion.

What a course will not give you

  • Judgement. Deciding what matters in a messy process comes from doing engagements.
  • Writing skill. The report is the product. Practise drafting observations, and read a worked internal audit report.
  • Industry knowledge. An internal auditor in a hospital or a factory needs to know how that business runs. See our guides on manufacturing and healthcare.
  • Tool fluency. Spreadsheets and data analysis are now basic skills.

How to choose

  1. Name the first role. Be specific: "concurrent auditor at a bank branch" is a better target than "internal audit".
  2. Check eligibility first. Many courses limit who can join.
  3. Ask what the credential is worth to the employer. Look at ten job posts for the role and note what they ask for.
  4. Check the cost in time, not only fees. Self-study certifications take months.
  5. Pair it with practice. Offer to help on a real engagement, even for a small client.
  6. Avoid collecting. One relevant credential and a good portfolio of work beats four unrelated ones.

If you run a firm

For a team, a short internal programme often beats sending people to many courses. Run a monthly session where a senior walks through one engagement's working papers and the lessons. Pair it with one external credential for those who want it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best internal audit course in India?

It depends on the role. Concurrent audit of banks, corporate internal audit and ISO audit each have a different best fit.

Can a non-CA take an internal audit course?

Some courses are open to non-CAs, others, such as ICAI's concurrent audit course, are for its members. Check each provider's eligibility.

Does the ICAI concurrent audit course give a qualification?

ICAI says a certificate course does not grant a qualification and should not be shown as one after the member's name.

Is CIA worth it?

That is covered in our CIA comparison. Check the IIA's current requirements.

Are online classes enough?

They help with knowledge. Working on real engagements builds the judgement employers look for.
