Internal audit vacancies in India sit in three places: company internal audit teams, CA and consulting firms that provide outsourced internal audit, and large firms with global practices. The same title can mean different work in each. Read the vacancy for who the audit reports to, what is reviewed and how much travel or fieldwork is expected, not only the title.
Last reviewed: 17 October 2026. Facts checked. We searched for career guidance and found mostly commercial job sites quoting salary ranges, which we did not use; no pay figures appear here. We did not open any employer vacancy or the IIA or ICAI career pages for this post. The role descriptions reflect general practice and our own earlier posts, and individual employers vary.
If you are earlier in the journey, start with our guide to the internal audit career path and the certification comparison. This post is about reading real vacancies.
Three kinds of employer
In-house internal audit teams
A company, usually listed or large, has its own function. Work is repeated across cycles: purchases, sales, payroll, compliance, IT. The person learns one business in depth. The head of internal audit often reports to the audit committee.
CA firms and outsourced internal audit
A firm provides internal audit to many clients. Work is varied, travel to client sites is common, and the volume of exposure to different industries is high. Hours often follow client deadlines. Section 138 allows a chartered accountant or other professional as internal auditor, which is why firms take these engagements.
Large firms with advisory and risk practices
Teams run internal audit, risk and controls work for big clients, often using global methodology. Roles are structured by grade, with training pathways.
Common titles and what they usually mean
| Title | What it usually involves |
|---|---|
| Internal audit executive or trainee | Carries out tests under supervision: sampling, vouching, working papers |
| Senior executive or assistant manager | Leads a process audit, drafts findings, supervises juniors |
| Manager | Plans audits, manages stakeholders, reviews reports, presents to management |
| Senior manager or head of internal audit | Owns the annual plan, reports to the audit committee, manages the function |
| IT or systems auditor | Tests system controls, access, change management, ERP configuration |
| Risk and controls analyst | Documents risks and controls, tests control design; may overlap with internal audit |
| Forensic or fraud analyst | Investigates suspected fraud, analyses data |
| Compliance auditor | Tests adherence to specific laws, such as GST, TDS or labour law |
Titles are not standard across employers. A manager in one firm may do the work of a senior executive in another. Use the description, not the title.
What to read in the description
- Reporting line. Does the role report to the audit committee or to the finance head? A function that reports to the finance head has less independence to challenge.
- Scope. Financial controls only, or operational, IT and compliance too?
- Industry. Manufacturing, banking, retail, services. Each has its own risks.
- Experience asked for. The years and qualifications show the grade, however the role is titled.
- Tools. Excel, data analytics tools, audit management software, ERP knowledge.
- Travel. Site visits and plants may be part of the work.
- Certifications named. A vacancy that lists CIA, CISA or an ICAI course tells you what the employer values.
- Mandate. If the vacancy mentions the audit charter or committee, the function has a formal footing.
Red flags
- No mention of reporting line or scope. The role may be a clerical checking job under another name.
- "Audit" that is really data entry or bookkeeping. Ask what the day looks like.
- Unlimited "other duties". Ask what share is audit.
- No training mentioned for a junior role. You will learn faster where there is review of your work.
- Expecting you to sign off without review. Audit work should be reviewed.
- Vague about travel or hours. Ask for specifics.
Questions to ask before accepting
- Who does the head of internal audit report to?
- How is the annual plan decided and who approves it?
- How many audits does a person lead in a year?
- How is my work reviewed and who gives feedback?
- What training and certification support is offered?
- How much travel and how much time at client sites?
- How do findings get followed up? Are they acted on?
- What did the team do last year that I would be proud of?
The questions also tell you if the function is respected in the business. Our guide to KPIs and quality metrics shows what a well-run function measures.
Preparing for the interview
Be ready to walk through a process you know: how a purchase is raised, approved, received and paid, and where it could go wrong. Practise explaining a control in plain words and what evidence would prove it works. Our post on internal audit interview questions has model answers. For the kind of output you will be asked to produce, see the sample report.
For non-CAs
Many internal audit roles accept graduates in commerce, finance or IT. A non-CA may start as an executive and grow through experience and certifications. Technology skills, analytics and clear writing help a great deal. Do not assume a CA is required; check the vacancy.
For CAs after articleship
Internal audit is a common first job. Weigh firm roles for breadth, and in-house roles for depth. Either way, aim to lead a full audit, from planning to report, within the first couple of years.

Frequently asked questions
What does an internal auditor do?
Tests controls and processes, finds gaps, reports them to management and the audit committee, and follows up on action.
Can freshers get internal audit jobs?
Yes. Trainee and executive roles exist at firms and companies. Read the description for supervision and training.
Do internal audit jobs need a CA?
Not always. Some roles ask for it. Others accept commerce, finance or IT graduates.
What is the difference between internal audit and statutory audit work?
Internal audit tests controls through the year for the board. Statutory audit gives an opinion on the financial statements. See our comparison.
What salary can I expect?
