Usage Notes
- Mark every page "Provisional — Unaudited" and have management sign the statements before the compilation report is signed. Do not use the words "audited", "certified true and correct" or "true and fair" anywhere on the document.
- Obtain an engagement letter that describes the work as a compilation, and a management-signed trial balance for the period. The report can only be as good as the books it was compiled from; if you become aware that the information is incomplete or misleading, ask management to correct it, and withdraw if it does not.
- If the Bank insists on assurance over provisional figures, that is a different engagement — a review of the interim financial information or an audit — with different work and a different report. Do not stretch this report to cover it.
- Where the firm is also the statutory auditor of a company, section 144 of the Companies Act, 2013 bars the auditor from rendering accounting and book-keeping services to it. The provisional statements must then be management's own preparation; consider whether your involvement should be limited to a certificate that stated figures agree with the books of account as on a date.
- When the audited accounts are signed, send the Bank a short reconciliation of the provisional and audited figures if they differ. It is the question the credit officer will ask at the next renewal.
