What is a purchase order used for?
It records what the buyer ordered, at what price and terms. It is later matched with the delivery and the supplier invoice before payment.
Is a purchase order a legal contract?
Once the supplier accepts it, it usually forms a contract on its terms. Have a lawyer check large or unusual orders.
Why should the PO number be on the invoice?
It lets the accounts team match the invoice, the goods received and the order, which is a basic control against duplicate or unauthorised payments.
