How We Selected These Free Resources
A "free tools" list is only useful if the tools are actually free and actually useful. Every resource on this list passes four tests:
- Genuinely free — no trial that expires, no paywall after three uses. Where a resource asks for anything (an email address, an ICAI login), we say so plainly.
- Built for Indian practice — Indian standards, Indian sections, Indian forms. A generic "audit checklist" written for US GAAP does not count.
- Current for 2026 — reflects the Income Tax Act 2025 transition, CARO 2020, the revised ICAI Code of Ethics, and FY 2026-27 rates and thresholds. Outdated free content is worse than no content.
- Usable the same day — a template you can fill in, a calculator that gives a number, a tracker you can cite. Not a brochure.
Full disclosure up front: several entries on this list are CORAA's own free resources — the template library, the calculators, the AI Lab, and the reference trackers. They are free because they are how we earn trust before anyone considers the paid audit platform. We have marked them clearly, and we have included the best non-CORAA free tools alongside them — government portals, ICAI's CA GPT, Tally's educational mode — because a list that only recommends its own catalogue is a brochure, not a resource.
The list is organised by job-to-be-done: drafting documents, running computations, getting AI assistance, looking things up, and staying current.
Where Can I Download Free ICAI Audit Working Paper Templates?
The largest free collection we know of is CORAA's template library at /tools/templates — 97 templates, downloadable as editable Word documents. Each template page shows the full content in the browser before you download anything, so you can judge quality first. One honest caveat: the Word download is behind an email gate — you enter an email address, the .docx arrives free. Browsing and reading every template requires nothing.
The library covers five distinct drafting jobs:
Audit working papers and ICAI-pattern documentation
The core of the library follows the ICAI working-paper pattern from appointment through completion: engagement acceptance, planning memos, execution working papers for every major caption (PPE, revenue, receivables, payables, inventory, borrowings), and completion documents. Start with these:
- Audit Engagement Letter (SA 210) — the document every engagement legally starts with, with management-responsibility and scope paragraphs aligned to SA 210.
- CARO 2020 Checklist — all 21 clauses as a working checklist you complete during fieldwork, so the annexure at the end writes itself.
- The pack also includes the Management Representation Letter, Independence Confirmation, SA 240 journal-entry testing paper, SA 570 going-concern assessment, and an SA 230 audit file index — the documents peer reviewers ask for first.
Tax audit and GST
- Form 3CD Tax Audit Report — the full 44-clause Form 3CD as a structured working document, not a blank PDF. This is the last season before Form 26 under the Income Tax Act 2025 replaces it, so a current-format template matters.
- GSTR-9C reconciliation and stock audit report formats sit in the same section.
CA certificates
Certificates are high-frequency, low-glamour work — and exactly where a verified format saves the most time:
- Turnover Certificate — the tender-submission staple, with UDIN field and basis-of-computation notes.
- Net worth certificates (including the visa/immigration variant), working capital, capital contribution, fund utilisation, Form 15CB, RERA Form 5, and a Rule 11UA share valuation certificate round out the set.
Income-tax notices and appeals
Notice replies are where a good skeleton prevents a bad first draft:
- Form 35 — Grounds of Appeal — CIT(A) appeal format with statement of facts and grounds structured the way appellate authorities expect.
- The section also covers Section 154 rectification, 119(2)(b) condonation, 220(6) stay of demand, 143(1) and 142(1) replies, 270A penalty responses, ITAT Form 36, and TRACES demand justification replies.
Deeds and agreements
- Partnership Deed — drafted with the Section 40(b) remuneration and interest clauses that determine deductibility, which generic deed formats routinely omit.
- HUF creation deed, gift deed, LLP agreement, and rent agreement formats complete the set.
Cost: free; email required for the Word download. Best for: any firm that is still redrafting engagement letters and certificates from last year's files.
Is There a Free Materiality Calculator for SA 320?
Yes — and a free SA 530 sampling calculator, a free CARO applicability checker, and about forty more. CORAA University at /university/calculators hosts 40+ interactive calculators and checkers, free with no login and no email gate. Each one shows its working — the formula, the statutory basis, worked examples, and common pitfalls — so the output is defensible in a working paper, not a black-box number.
The ones most firms use weekly:
- Materiality Calculator (SA 320) — overall, performance, and clearly-trivial materiality across PBT, revenue, assets, and expense benchmarks, with entity-type adjustments.
- Audit Sampling Calculator (SA 530) — Monetary Unit Sampling and attribute sampling sample sizes with confidence levels and risk factors.
- TDS Rate Finder FY 2026-27 — searchable section-wise rates and thresholds, including the Income Tax Act 2025 renumbering (Section 392/393) and 194T partner payments.
- Schedule II Depreciation Calculator — useful-life SLM/WDV under the Companies Act 2013 with the 5% residual cap, shift adjustments, and pro-rata.
- Tax Audit Applicability Checker (Section 44AB) — the ₹1 Cr/₹10 Cr business limits with both 5%-cash tests, profession limits, and the 44AD(4)/44ADA(4) presumptive traps.
- MSME 43B(h) Disallowance Checker — the per-invoice 15/45-day MSMED window test that decides year-end disallowance.
- CARO 2020 Applicability Checker — small-company carve-out, exemptions, and the 21 reporting clauses.
- GST Late Fee & Interest Calculator — Section 47 late fee plus Section 50 interest at 18% computed on the cash-ledger portion only, which most rough calculations get wrong.
The set extends into Ind AS work — Ind AS 116 lease capitalisation and Ind AS 109 ECL, Ind AS 115 revenue testing — plus CSR under Section 135, Section 186 loan caps, auditor rotation under 139(2), and the ICAI 60 tax-audit ceiling effective 1 April 2026.
Cost: free, no login. Best for: replacing the ad-hoc Excel sheets every firm rebuilds each season — with the added benefit that the statutory citation comes attached.
Honest alternatives: ClearTax and Zoho both publish good free consumer-facing tax calculators (income tax, HRA, GST). They are aimed at taxpayers rather than practitioners — you will not find SA 320 materiality or CARO applicability there — but for quick client-facing income-tax estimates they are perfectly serviceable and require nothing.
What Free AI Tools Can Chartered Accountants Use in 2026?
Two genuinely free options stand out, and they complement rather than compete.
ICAI's CA GPT
ICAI's CA GPT (partnered with OpenAI) is the institute's own AI platform, free for members with usage limits. As of mid-2026 it reportedly hosts 70+ specialised chatbots — accounting standards, auditing, direct tax, GST, company law, ethics — and reported figures put it past 500,000 users with a free daily limit of around 20 prompts. Treat those numbers as reported rather than independently verified, but the direction is clear: it has become the default first stop for a quick standards question.
Its strength is authority — it is trained on ICAI's own material. Its limits are the prompt cap and the fact that it answers questions rather than doing engagement work. We wrote a detailed tool-by-tool assessment in our honest review of CA GPT's 70+ tools, and a deeper piece on what an AI for CA work actually needs architecturally.
Cost: free for ICAI members, daily prompt limits. Best for: quick standards and section lookups with institutional backing.
CORAA AI Lab
The AI Lab is CORAA's free companion to using general-purpose AI properly in audit work — no login required:
- Audit Prompt Library — 29 audit-specific prompts, each engineered with the statutory context and output structure that make ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini answers usable in a working paper rather than generic.
- SA Procedure Library — Standards on Auditing mapped to typical procedures, browsable by standard.
- CARO 2020 Clause Navigator — all 21 clauses, interactive, with reporting requirements per clause.
- Tool Guides — honest guidance on using Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity for audit tasks, including what not to paste into a public model (client data — see the DPDP implications).
Cost: free, no login. Best for: firms that want to use general AI models safely and get consistent, citable output from them.
Which Free Government Portals and Utilities Should Every CA Firm Use?
These are free by design, and several are underused:
- Income Tax e-Filing portal utilities — the offline/Excel utilities for ITR preparation (JSON-based, with pre-filled data import), the e-verification service, and the UDIN-updation functionality against uploaded audit reports. CA users log in with the ARCA-prefixed membership ID.
- UDIN portal — generation and verification of Unique Document Identification Numbers, mandatory for certificates and audit reports. Free, and the verification side is a genuinely useful client-diligence tool.
- GST portal — GSTR-2B downloads, the Invoice Management System (mandatory from 1 April 2026 — our free IMS reconciliation guide covers the audit chain), returns offline tools, and e-invoice verification.
- MCA portal — company master data, director details (DIN lookups), and charge search are free; document inspection costs a nominal fee. Essential for client acceptance checks.
- TRACES — Form 26AS, justification reports for TDS demands, and challan status. Pairs directly with the free TDS demand justification reply template.
- TallyPrime Educational Mode — Tally's free educational mode gives the full TallyPrime interface for training articles, with one practical restriction: voucher dates are limited (1, 2, and the last day of the month), so it is a training tool, not a bookkeeping workaround. Download from tallysolutions.com.
Cost: free (statutory portals). Best for: everything — these are not optional.
For desk reference alongside the portals, three free CORAA pages earn a bookmark:
- Audit Compliance Calendar FY 2026-27 — 118 deadlines, personalisable by GST filing mode, exportable to your calendar with reminders.
- Audit Decision Trees — eight yes/no flowcharts: CARO applicability, Section 188 RPT, 44AB, Ind AS vs AS, NFRA jurisdiction, 143(12) fraud reporting, opinion type, SQM 1.
- Audit Glossary and the downloads hub for checklists and season-kit material.
How Do CA Firms Stay Current on Regulatory Changes for Free?
Two habits, both free:
- NFRA Enforcement Tracker — every public NFRA order from 2022 to 2026 (19 verified orders as of this writing): penalty amounts, debarments, the audited entity, the root cause, and the Standards on Auditing cited, sourced from nfra.gov.in. Reading what auditors were actually sanctioned for is the fastest quality-control education available, and it is a better prioritisation signal than any CPE hour.
- Regulatory Updates — a running log of ICAI, MCA, and CBDT notifications relevant to audit practice, including the IndSA revised-standards status and the Income Tax Act 2025 transition items.
Alongside these, the primary sources remain free: ICAI announcements (icai.org), the NFRA orders page, and CBDT/GST notification streams. The trackers above are curation, not substitution — they link back to the source documents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these templates actually free, or is there a catch?
The 97 templates at /tools/templates are free to read in full in the browser with no login. The editable Word download requires an email address — that is the whole "catch", stated plainly. The 40+ calculators and the AI Lab have no gate at all: no login, no email. The government portals (income tax, GST, MCA, UDIN, TRACES) are free statutory infrastructure.
Where can I download a free engagement letter format as per SA 210?
The Audit Engagement Letter template follows SA 210 — scope, management responsibilities, reporting framework, and fee clauses — and downloads as an editable Word document. It sits in a set of ICAI-pattern appointment documents including the auditor appointment note, previous-auditor NOC, and independence confirmation.
Is there a free Form 3CD format for AY 2026-27?
Yes — the Form 3CD Tax Audit Report template covers all 44 clauses in the current format. Note that this is the final season on Form 3CD before the Income Tax Act 2025 regime replaces it with Form 26; our Form 3CA vs 3CB vs 3CD explainer covers which wrapper applies and the transition.
Is ICAI's CA GPT really free, and is it good enough for audit work?
CA GPT is free for ICAI members within daily usage limits (reportedly around 20 prompts/day). It is genuinely useful for standards and section lookups because it is trained on ICAI's own material. It is not an audit tool — it answers questions; it does not test transactions, build working papers, or reconcile GSTR data. Our honest review of its 70+ tools goes tool by tool.
What is the best free materiality calculator for Indian audits?
The SA 320 Materiality Calculator computes overall, performance, and clearly-trivial materiality across the standard benchmarks with entity-type adjustments, shows the computation basis, and cites the standard — so the number can go straight into your planning memo with its working attached. It is free with no login.
Can free tools replace paid audit software for a small firm?
For drafting, computation, and reference — largely yes, and this list is the proof. What free tools cannot do is the transactional work: scrutinising a full general ledger, matching books to GSTR-2B and Form 26AS, vouching invoices, and generating populated working papers from client data. That is execution, not reference, and it is where paid platforms earn their fee. A sensible 2026 stack is: free tools for everything on this page, paid automation only for the engagement-execution layer. Our criteria-first guide to audit software in India covers how to evaluate that layer without vendor spin.
What free resources help with NFRA and peer review readiness?
Start with the NFRA Enforcement Tracker to see what actually gets sanctioned, then work through the free documentation templates that peer reviewers request first — the CARO 2020 checklist, SA 230 audit file index, and EQCR process documents in the templates library. The decision trees at /resources/audit-decision-trees help evidence the applicability judgements that reviews probe.
The Bottom Line
A CA firm in 2026 can assemble a genuinely strong free stack: 97 templates for drafting, 40+ calculators for computation, CA GPT and a free prompt library for AI assistance, the statutory portals for filings and verification, and free trackers for staying current. None of it costs a rupee beyond an email address for template downloads.
The honest boundary is execution. Free tools give you the format, the number, and the reference — they do not scrutinise a ledger, reconcile GSTR-2B against books, or produce populated working papers from client data. When you hit that boundary, the same principle applies as everywhere on this list: try before you pay. CORAA's trial is one full free audit — you run a real engagement end to end at studio.coraa.ai and decide only when you want to do a second. Details on the pricing page.
